Senator Joe Getty talks Scouts in Northern News (December 6th Edition)

It took 80 years to accomplish the feat. However, at Matthew Ogg's Eagle Scout ceremony Nov. 25, it became official: Boy Scout Troop 320, marking the 80th year since its founding in Manchester, celebrated its first father and son duo to achieve the pinnacle of Scouting.

In 1981, Matthew's father David Ogg earned the rank of Eagle Scout after completing a leadership project of constructing picnic benches at Christmas Tree Park, Manchester. Ogg continued his commitment to scouting by then serving as Scoutmaster of the troop for four years.

Matthew's leadership project was completed at St. John's (Leister's) Lutheran Church, Westminster, where he enclosed and improved the picnic pavilions on the church grounds. Taking design tips from sections of the pavilions already enclosed, he drew up plans to make vertical hinging doors so that the openings could be raised and lowered at convenience.

At the Eagle ceremony also held at Leister's church, Pastor Kristin Dubsky lauded the project and the improvement to the facilities. Ogg's construction project provides a more efficient design for serving at the annual strawberry and peach festivals as well as storage space for the church.

A highlight at the ceremony was the transfer of an Indian headdress made by Ed Copeland. As a 1980s Troop 320 leader knowledgeable about Indian lore, Copeland challenged his scouts to attain the Eagle rank and promised a hand-crafted Indian headdress made by him to those who achieved the goal.

David and his older brother Kenneth both earned their Eagle ranks. David now has both headdresses made by Copeland after his brother was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1983. It was an emotional moment for David, his wife Lisa and their two daughters, Emily and Melanie, as David described the origin of the headdress, then placed it on Matthew's head.

Earlier in November, Matthew spoke about the history of Troop 320 Eagle Scouts for the 80th anniversary celebration held at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. During his comments, he acknowledged that his own family's heritage in scouting was important as motivation for completing his goal prior to the age deadline established in scout regulations.

Hey Scout! You can join Baltimore Area Council participating in 70th Anniversary of Invasion of Normandy, April 2014

How would you like to take part in a historical event that meant so much too so many, the liberation of Europe from Adolf Hitler’s grasp?

Commanded by U.S. Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Normandy assault phase, code-named "Neptune" (the entire operation was "Overlord"), was launched when weather reports predicted satisfactory conditions on 6 June. Hundreds of amphibious ships and craft, supported by combatant warships, crossed the English Channel behind dozens of minesweepers. They arrived off the beaches before dawn. Three divisions of paratroopers (two American, one British) had already been dropped inland. Following a brief bombardment by ships' guns, Soldiers of six divisions (three American, two British and one Canadian) stormed ashore in five main landing areas, named "Utah", "Omaha", "Gold", "Juno" and "Sword". After hard fighting, especially on "Omaha" Beach, by day's end a foothold was well established.

Baltimore Area Council has been invited to participate in the 70th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy in April of 2014. This will be a 10 day trip that will cover stops in London, Pas de Cali, Normandy, and Paris. We will be visiting the Churchill’s bunkers, Rommel’s Panzer locations, the beaches of Normandy along with the American Cemetery in Normandy. If you would like to walk the beaches where you’re grandfathers tread or would like more information about this unforgettable event please go to our web site, http://www.baltimorebsa.org/normandy or contact Jenna Welle at jwelle@BaltimoreBSA.org or Glenn Sellers at gsellers@umm.edu. The Gathering of Eagles is the premier event or gathering for Eagle Scouts in the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America calling Eagle Scouts and their friends from throughout central Maryland.  The 2012 Gathering of Eagles is November 15, 2012 www.baltimorebsa.org/goe

The Eagle Scout Award. It’s Scouting’s highest rank and among its most familiar icons.

Men who have earned it count it among their most treasured possessions. Those who missed

it by a whisker remember exactly which requirement they didn’t complete. Americans from

all walks of life know that being an Eagle Scout is a great honor, even if they don’t know

just what the badge means.

The award is more than a badge. It’s a state of being. You are an Eagle Scout—never

were. You may have received the badge as a boy, but you earn it every day as a man. In the

words of the Eagle Scout Promise, you do your best each day to make your training and

example, your rank and your influence count strongly for better Scouting and for better

citizenship in your troop, in your community, and in your contacts with other people. And

to this you pledge your sacred honor.

Msg from Harford County Emergency Mgmt Regarding Hurricane threat

Good Morning, this is Emergency Manager Rick Ayers with an hurricane warning message. I want to emphasize the potential for a very dangerous situation for Harford County. The main impact for our county will be Sunday night through Tuesday, when we could have sustained Tropical Storm Force Winds and Hurricane Gusts of 80 MPH. The potential for major flooding along the coast and inland is also a concern, with rain amounts expected between 6 and 12" and higher in some areas. The possibility of a major storm surge along the Chesapeake Bay will occur if the hurricane makes landfall near mouth of the bay and a storm surge of 4 to 8' is possible. The County EOC (Emergency Operations Center) is activating today to make necessary decisions for the safety of our citizens. However, at this time (you the citizen)need to be pro-active. Make sure you have your cell phones entered into our Emergency Notification System, by going to our website www.harfordpublicsafety.org and click "sign-up now or call 410-638-4900. Make sure that you have a 3-day supply of water and canned foods for your family, have a battery operated radio and extra batteries. Although, we will have shelters available, if you live in an area prone to flooding..please consider a plan to relocate to a safe area. I can't stress enough...this is a major storm and take this serious. Thanks and be safe.

From Dulaney Commissioner George Stover "one word for the visit -INSPIRATIONAL"

From George Stover, Dulaney District Commissioner, Baltimore Area Council: "Casey Cunningham, Bob Bell and I visited Troop 730, a Special Needs Unit.  I have one word for the visit- INSPIRATIONAL.  The unit members and their leaders are truly dedicated to scouting and its foundation. From their oldest scout (aged 61) to scout Ricky Shine (who has not missed a meeting in 14 years), they all beamed with pride to wear their uniforms. The camaraderie was infectious...witness a true scouting experience."

Baltimore Area Council Leadership Update on the IV Files and Youth Protection Policy

The media has a copy of the IV file. Local councils do not have these files. The IV files are maintained at the National office; we do not have any additional information beyond what is made public by a plaintiff attorney. The events and creation of those files happened between 30 and 50 years ago. It is not possible for our Council to address any aspects or details about them. What we CAN tell you is that the criticisms of those files relate to previous practices and procedures that have evolved since its creation and have been changed to better recognize, report and protect youth from abuse. For example, BSA current policy says that any good faith suspicion of abuse must be reported to the proper law enforcement agencies by its members and volunteers, and an individual is removed from Scouting as soon as a report is received. All registered leaders must undergo criminal background checks and take BSA Youth Protection training. BSA will keep individuals out of Scouting based on information we have, even if law enforcement determines that information insufficient to take action. Click on www.scouting.org for a straight-forward comprehensive overview of our BSA Youth Protection Policy.
