“The Challenge is to remain
relevant for today’s youth and adaptable…remaining true to the mission of
Scouting”, Barry Williams, Chairman of the Board for our Baltimore Area
Council.
Communities in central Maryland are
fortunate in that the nurturing efforts of dedicated volunteers produce more
than one thousand growing and vibrant Scouting programs as a strong force for
good.
From the Report to the State and
University of Scouting to the vast and varied summer camp staffs....to the
Jamboree leadership gearing up for eleven Troops at the Bechtel Summit....to
Wood Badge....to hundreds of participants at Philmont....to Order of the Arrow
youth leadership development and fellowship....to hundreds of Districts programs....and more....Scouting is
helping parents raise strong children
.
In the midst of this plethora of
quality programs effecting more than 50,000 youth and adult leaders, Baltimore
Area Council volunteer leaders and staff have just completed a six month
learning process producing a new five-year Strategic Plan. This process invited
two reasonable questions from Barry Williams, Chairman of the Board, Chad
Gillenwater, Advisory Board Chair, Commissioner Trey Shupert and others: “What
do we want to be in the future” and “how do we want to get there.”
We are grateful that fellow board
member Chris Inglis, a Distinguished Eagle Scout himself, served as our chair
for the Strategic Plan Key Committee.
Under his capable leadership, seven sub-committees organized. Our
countless thanks to the following chairs: Impact & Participation Committee
– Dr. Kevin Maxwell, Vice Chair of the Board-Membership and Superintendent,
Anne Arundel Public Schools; Resources and Finances- David Gibbons, Executive
Vice Chair of the Board and Partner, Hogan Lovells LLP; Building Our Brand –
Dwight Crone, National Pike District Chair and Partner, McFarlin Insurance;
Dynamic and Relevant Program-Ron Andro, Vice Chair of the Board and Chief
Operating Officer, Baltimore-Washington Medical Center; Innovation and
Technology – Steve Martino, Vice Chair of the Board and Director of the
Maryland Lottery; Youth Advocacy and Strategic Relationship – Gerald Stansbury,
Vice Chair of the Board-Relationships and President, NAACP Maryland Conference;
Leadership Excellence and Culture – Ken Kelly, Council Treasurer and SVP,
Corporate Controller, McCormick & Company.
Each sub-committee was tasked with
examining our current status and how we can further extend the vision of the
Boy Scouts of America throughout Central Maryland. It’s the Executive Boards’
intent to invite various standing committees of the Baltimore Area Council to
help guide the tactical aspects of the plan that have been developed. You are invited to review the Executive
